Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”(John 11:40)

요한복음 11장에서 우리는 예수님의 절친한 친구였던 나사로가 세상을 떠난 가슴 아픈 이야기를 접하게 됩니다. 나사로의 누이 마르다는 예수님께 “주께서 여기 계셨더라면 내 오라버니가 죽지 아니하였겠나이다”라고 한탄하며 슬픔을 예수님께 표현합니다. 이에 대해 예수님은 믿음의 본질을 요약하는 심오한 말씀을 하십니다. “내가 너희에게 이르노니 네가 믿으면 하나님의 영광을 보리라 하지 아니하였느냐?”

“네가 믿었더라면 내가 말하지 아니하였느냐”라는 이 말은 믿음이 단순히 사실이나 교리를 수동적으로 받아들이는 것이 아니라는 점을 상기시켜 주는 역할을 합니다. 그것은 우리의 삶을 형성하고 우리를 특별함을 향해 열어줄 수 있는 활동적인 힘이자 변혁적인 힘입니다. 믿음을 통해서 우리는 물리적 세계의 한계를 뛰어넘어 하나님의 무한한 사랑과 은혜를 경험할 수 있습니다.

슬픔의 순간에 마르다는 예수님의 말씀의 온전한 의미를 이해하려고 애쓰고 있습니다. 그녀는 오빠의 죽음이라는 현실에 매달리며 부활의 가능성을 이해할 수 없습니다. 하지만 예수의 반응은 그녀의 슬픔을 질책하거나 무시하는 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 그것은 변화를 일으키는 믿음의 힘을 받아들이라는 초대이자 온화한 부르심입니다.

믿음은 삶의 도전과 고난을 부인하는 것이 아닙니다. 어둠 속에서도 언제나 빛의 가능성이 있다는 것을 인식하는 것입니다. 이는 즉각적인 상황 너머를 보기로 선택하고 우주에 스며드는 가장 중요한 선함과 사랑을 신뢰하는 것입니다.

In the Gospel of John, Chapter 11, we encounter the poignant story of Lazarus, a close friend of Jesus who has died. Martha, Lazarus' sister, expresses her grief to Jesus, lamenting, "If only you had been here, my brother would not have died." Jesus, in response, offers a profound statement that encapsulates the essence of faith: "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"

These words, "Did I not tell you that if you believed," serve as a reminder that belief is not merely a passive acceptance of facts or doctrines; it is an active force, a transformative power that can shape our lives and open us to the extraordinary. It is through belief that we can transcend the limitations of our physical world and experience the boundless love and grace of God.
